Sights explored

St. Petersburg: Peter and Paul Fortress
Peter and Paul Fortress was designed to defend the city from naval attacks, but was used as a political prison for dissidents of the tsarist regime and as a museum during the soviet era. The fortress now stands as the tomb for the Russian imperial family.
St. Petersburg: the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood
The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood was built to commemorate one of Russia's greatest emperors. Alexander II is most famous for liberating the Russian serfs two years before the abolition of slavery in the U.S. After he was assassinated, the Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood was erected in his honor.
St. Petersburg: St. Isaac's Cathedral
St. Isaac's Cathedral is one of the most impressive cathedrals in Europe. Because of its rich decorations, gigantic golden cupolas, and sprawling observation deck, it is one of the most popular tourist sites in St. Petersburg.
St. Petersburg: Catherine's Palace

The Catherine Palace is a striking example of baroque architecture with its gorgeous interiors that are more than spectacular. The Palace was a gift from Peter the Great to his wife Catherine, whom he loved very much, and is most famous for its Amber Room, which was looted by the Germans during the WWII but then restored in the following 50 years. This 325-meter-long edifice impresses with its facade of uncompromised grandeur. By the way, more than 100 kg of gold were spent to decorate it during the Elizabeth's reign.

Interesting facts:

* In Elizabeth's reign it took over 100 kg of gold to decorate the palace exteriors.
* Tsarskoye Selo is also associated with Russia’s greatest poet Alexander Pushkin, who studied in the town’s Lyceum from 1811 to 1817.

St. Petersburg: Peterhof
Many of Russia's noble families were reluctant to move their residences to Peter the Great's new northern capital, and the Tsar was forced to issue a decree banning to build elsewhere in the country, so as to ensure that the nation's wealth and construction skills were transferred to St. Petersburg. Only a century later, the city could boast a huge number of palaces, including some of the grandest residences not just in Russia, but in the whole Europe.

Peterhof or "Peter's Yard", we are going to visit today, is considered to be the fountain capital of the world, an absolute architectural gem of St. Petersburg. This royal residence on the outskirts of St. Petersburg is  most famous for its Versailles-inspired fountain park. It was the official summer residence of Russian tsars and played host to such ruler as Peter the Great. Visit magnificent Grand Summer Palace, lavishly decorated with the two white pavilions with gilded cupolas at the end of the wings. Stroll in the vast Lower Park with 176 glorious fountains of various forms and styles and four cascades, majestic palaces, numerous gilded statues of ancient gods and heroes, including the famous Samson Fountain.
Mandrogi

Mandrogi is a small village that has no architectural wonders, castles, or impressive churches. This land seems to be immune to the flow of time, frozen in a relaxing period of carelessness and calm. Surrounded by the serenity of Mandrogi, you can have a traditional Russian picnic called Shashlik.

Kizhi Island

Kizhi Island on Lake Onega is home to the massive Transfiguration Church. With 22 domes that extend over this small yet picturesque island, there are two interesting facts that surround it. Despite all of its architectural wonders, not a single nail was used to build it. Also, its original location was on the mainland, closer to the people. The Bolsheviks, for all their hatred of religion, wanted to destroy the church, but did not dare to do so. They decided to transport the church to a deserted island where no one would be able to see it. That's why today it can only be reached by river cruise. You will spend this day exploring Kizhi Island and its amazing ensemble of wooden churches.

Goritsy
The town of Goritsy is home to the historic Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery, built in 1397. During the Time of Trouble, Polish invaders stormed the monastery in attempt to purge Russia of its remaining nobles. Unsuccessful, they were forced out by the renewed Russian forces. You will visit the monastery of St. Cyril-on-the-White-Lake and a museum of icons.
Uglich
Located on the banks of the Volga River, Uglich presented itself as a perfect fortress of defense for the ancient Moscovy Kingdom. In 1591 the 10-year-old prince Dmitry of the ancient Ruyrik dynasty was murdered here by Boris Godunov before Godunov claimed the throne of Russia and was murdered himself. These events plunged Russia into three decades of political turmoil known as the Time of Trouble, leaving the lands devastated and open for a new dynasty: the Romanovs. We will visit the small but historically significant church of St. Dmitry-on-Blood, which stands on the location of the young prince’s murder.
Moscow: Novodevichiy Convent
Novodevichiy Convent is one of the oldest monasteries in Moscow. It was unofficial center of the opposition to the Romanov's family, and remained virtually intact since 17th century. Beyond the five-golden-domed structure, housing the Our Lady of Smolensk icon, the central point of the original convent, there are a number of churches on the grounds: Transfiguration, Holy Virgin, St. Amvrosi, and the Refectory. Novodevichiy Covent was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Sight in 2004.
Moscow: Tretyakov Gallery
The Tretyakov State Art Gallery is the best art gallery in the city. The foremost depository of Russian fine art in the world, this public exhibition opened in 1856 when textile trader and merchant banker Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov, deciding that Russia needed a national art gallery, contributed his personal collection to the cause. It took 25 years of collecting and contributing for his unofficial city gallery to become popular. By 1893, the collection was moved into its current location and became the “Pavel and Sergey Tretyakov City Art Gallery.”
Moscow: The Kremlin
The heart of Moscow, the Kremlin, is located on the bustling Red Square. The Kremlin is the most recognizable symbol of Moscow. This ancient citadel was constructed in 1147 to defend the city from the Mongols and the Lithuanians. Moscow has since grown beyond the original walls, but the Kremlin has remained a representation of political power in Russia. Russian Emperors, Soviet rulers, and Russian contemporary leaders alike used the Kremlin for official ceremonies and  added their own personal touches by constructing new buildings, museums, churches, and galleries. More about Moscow
Moscow: St. Basil's Cathedral
St. Basil's Cathedral is one of the most famous works of architecture in Moscow. This colorful cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Basil the Blessed, was built between 1555 and 1561.
