Rostov-on-Don is unusually green city, strolling along its streets, you will see wide leafy alleys and parks which give some atmosphere of calmness so uncommon to a big city. And although it also suffered a lot during the October Revolution (Cossacks organized a fierce resistance to the Bolsheviks) and WW2, it preserved that special atmosphere of the Cossacks' freedom-loving spirit. You may even meet in the streets Cossack military people, their regimentals look really colourful and impressive. These skilful warriors have always protected the southern borders, now they form the reserve troops of the Russian army.
To see the ancient treasures of the Don region and to understand the freedom-loving and independent spirit of the Cossacks, you should visit the Regional Museum, which is famous for its unique archaeological collection. Here are on display golden and silver artefacts, some of which were created by Faberge himself. It contains many artefacts of Cossack way of life (they are especially interesting, because they show their culture at its peak). Besides, here you will find artefacts like jewellery and weapons dating back to late BC and early AD and a collection dedicated to the prehistory of the region when it was inhabited by ancient Scythian, Sarmat and Savromat tribes.
The Fine Arts Museum displays a great collection (6000 exhibits) of the XIX century Russian paintings. Among the highlights are the masterpieces of famous Russian artists Repin, Levitan, Surikov and Petrov. Apart from museums, you find interesting to see the Nativity of the Virgin Cathedral built in 1885 by the architect of The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, Big Kremlin Palace and Oruzheinaya Palata (Armory Chamber) in Moscow. This snow-white cathedral is decorated by massive golden onion-domes and due to its imposing architecture, it is considered to be the centre of the city's architectural ensemble.
Rostov Zoo might be a nice change of atmosphere. This is an almost magic place where animals of all the five continents are present, among them are bears, wolves, rhinos, monkeys, tigers, lions - it's impossible to mention everything. Their special pride is the section of aquarium with a great variety of fish species. And in the terrarium there are collected rare species of crocodiles, turtles and snakes.
The experience of this city won't be complete without trying Cossack national cuisine and listening to the traditional singing. A popular place of entertainment is the area on the left bank of the Don river, where you can find many restaurants, cafes and special places where you can taste Don cuisine and shashlyk (a meat dish which smell already makes your mouth water). You will be pleasantly surprised by the wide choice of entertainments on offer.
