Architects and Writers Part I

The Boyars museum was a labyrinth of stone underground armories, low-ceiling oak rooms and steep narrow stairways, just what you would expect for the Middle Ages. the Russian touch was the huge tiled Russian stoves; built to actually sleep on when winter arrived. After leaving the museum, we headed for the Metro once again, passing through the Gostiny Dvor area (literally "The Merchants Yard"); once the central market of the city, and now renovated into a exhibition hall. But the exterior still retains its late 18th century style...

Nearby is another interesting building, located at Staraya square, the Boyarsky Dvor Office Building...








It was designed by Russia's greatest Art Noveau architect, Fyodor Shekhtel. We saw his work in the Morozova Mansion, and we are going, via Metro, to see another of his masterpieces, the Gorky House...
