The Golden Ring - Russia's Heartland
A ring of ancient cities encompass Moscow. It was Moscow's centrality that helped it "raise above Russian cities." Interestingly, most of Russian ancient sit on the Volga River or one of the extensions, which means you can sail across Russia visiting most of its important cities, just like Vikings did hundreds of years ago. The towns around Moscow are often referred to us the Golden Ring:

Northern Russia
Moscow defeated the Mongols in 14th century quickly grew to become one of Europe's most prominent kingdoms. However, Russian merchants were blocked from the seas by powerful Sweden in the North and the Ottoman Empire in the South. Young and ambitions czar, Peter, embarked on a quest to gain access to the Baltic Sea and as a result, one of Europe's most beautiful cities was born - St Petersburg.

Southern Russia
One of the first things that Moscow czars did after defeating the Mongols, was to capture
Kazan - capital of Eastern part of the Mongol Empire and since then, the Moscovia crossed swords with the Ottoman Empire. Russia's south is home to many great cities, like Volgograd (former Stalingrad), Astrakhan and many great cultures, like Cossacks. Russian resort city of Sochi will be the site of 2014 Winter Olympics.
